ISSN: 2182-147X

The avant-garde, literally meaning 'advanced guard,' explores unknown territories and faces initial challenges. It breaks with traditions, introduces innovations. It provokes, questions, seeks other forms of expression and experimentation. It expands the boundaries of knowledge. Positioned at the forefront, experimental poetry manifests the tension between volatility and persistence. It eludes fixations, inspiring tributes and revisitations, and, although it resists conventional definition, it welcomes curatorial interpretations.

To celebrate and produce new readings of the rich and multifaceted legacy of Salette Tavares' work, this issue of the 2i Journal invited the submission of articles that explicitly develop new and relevant research on her work. (...) Although the possible angles of approach are not exclusive to those included in this volume, we believe that this collection of texts allows us to map and signal the complexity and scope that Salette Tavares’ work reflects today.

As computational environments emerge from our distributed and ever changing media ecology, our cultural contexts shift and transform as well. The impacts of algorithmic narrativity on renewed and emerging narrative forms demand contextualized and situated studies about how they are produced, circulated and extracted, as well as self-assessment and criticism to explain how interactions of human authors with non-human agents are programmed, structured and delivered.

The project «O homem que queria ser água [the man who wanted to be aqua]», by António Abernú, merges different forms of narrative transposition. The goal of this article is to present his project, focusing on the frontier-blurring transpositions. In the current networked media environment, this narrative illustrates how stories travel across multiple media and platforms. As water, a vital substance embracing metamorphosis, changing from solid to liquid and gas, transmedia narratives circulate.

Advertising uses different strategies to make its discours-es effective, including unusual formats of placement, as is the case with Ambient Advertisings. This research aims to understand how an Ambient Advertising piece has the capacity to attract the attention of urban users and produce some meaning for them. Thus, the research problem is configured as: How does Ambient Advertising develop its meaning effects to attract its target audience? To answer this question, we use Peirce's interpretive semiotics, based on the concepts explained by C. S. Peirce and his scholars.

With this issue 4 of TRANSLOCAL, we hope to provide some possible answers to the multiple questions that António Aragão's work leaves us with: how important and current are his studies? How relevant are his texts to understanding the multiplicity of literature and its relationship with other arts? What is the author's place in the context of literary experimentalism? What stimuli in his work allow us to think about our mediated society? What do these exercises tell us about his moment and what aspects of his thinking still persist? What marks did his communicative action leave? What traces of his dialogues with cultural and arts agents of his time do we identify? What does his critical spirit teach us about the importance of deviating from the norms?

This book appears with a double purpose. On the one hand, to mark the centenary of this poet's birth and, with as much fidelity as possible — in composition and content —, to present a comprehensive selection that sought to highlight the poetic aspect of his work. On the other hand, to make clear his role as a promoter (in a literal and metaphorical sense), as a permanent researcher and creator in various arts, whose production and mobilizing capacity made different artists and poets coincide, helping to inaugurate a new moment in the literary (and not only) Portuguese panorama, in the sixties, continued autonomously until today.

The aim of this article is to identify and describe two distinct ways of using the network with regard to literature: as a means of dissemination, considered weak use, ena-bling archives, databases and other electronic publishing systems, that is, literature on the network; and as a means of production, con-sidered a strong use, motivating emerging genres, human-machine symbiosis and mech-anisms of cyberliterary production, that is, lit-erature as a network.

In: Interférences litteraires/literaire interferenties, 25, «Literature and/as (the) digital», dir. Chris Tanasecu. pp. 93-141. ISSN: 2031-2970

Innovative forms of poetry such as language art and experimental poetry have adopted intersemiotic processes and linguistic constraints in their codification, promoting rereading and transgression of technical apparatuses from the techno-capitalist societies. In addition, new inventive forms of digital language art, such as electronic poetry, have integrated generativity, indeterminacy and combinatorics in their programming, stimulating the reinvention and subversion of computing mechanisms from the networked societies.

The term wreading has been used in a diverse number of contexts, especially when the process of reading hypertext fictions is under analysis. However, we believe that, in some works of digital poetry, this term acquires a particular meaning which will be explored in this article. We will begin by examining the conditions in which this literary form emerged and evolved by exploring the specificity of poetic discourse, identifying several of digital poetry's antecedents and exploring a connection between art and technology.

Liberdade e Invenção: a poeprática de E. M. de Melo e Castro. TORRES, Rui & CARDOSO, Inês (2021). Liberdade e Invenção: a poeprática de E. M. de Melo e Castro. In: Colóquio/Letras, 207. Lisboa, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. pp 141-153. ISSN: 0010-1451

Poet, artist and one of the most active promoters of Portuguese Experimental Poetry, E. M. de Melo e Castro left us a vast work in which he privileged the crossing of multiple languages, media and materialities. Driven by the intention of promoting constant experimentation and investigation, the poet simultaneously developed an intense theoretical-critical activity, which was accompanied by persistent work of organization and dissemination. This essay seeks to think about and integrate the different facets of the author's work, taking as a starting point two coordinates that guided his poetic practice, here understood as a poetic practice: freedom and invention.

The guiding question of this study is configured as follows: How do advertising interventions produce meaning in the city space to the point of involving and persuading the individuals who interact with them? This research aims to evaluate the ways in which marketing strategies interact with city users in order to win them over and build their commercial discourse, analyzing the intervention itself and its capacity to generate meaning.

This article presents and discusses cyberliterature produced in Portugal since the 1960s, focusing on the dialogues and metamorphoses in which experimentalist invention moves. Although Pedro Barbosa's pioneering adventure, in the late 1970s, marks the beginning of the use of textual algorithms that resulted in cybernetic experiments for the automatic synthesis of poems and aphorisms, the way in which other Portuguese poets, before Barbosa, transposed combinatorial and random processes for creating non-computational texts, as is the case of Herberto Helder, E. M. de Melo e Castro, Ana Hatherly and José-Alberto Marques, deserves attention.

This speculative text presents some cyberliterature works from a pedagogical perspective situated in an uncertain future (this: 2029). This parodic fiction results, on the one hand, from experiences in teaching seminars, courses and workshops on electronic literature and, on the other, from creative practice involving digital poems. It is based on the hypothesis that in the context of electronic writing there is no essential difference between pedagogical and creative practice (...). Therefore, we can imagine a future in which the National Reading Plan 2027 finally comes into action.

The Cyberliterary Efficacy of Combinatory Literature in Urban Cishet University Students (or how to imagine a paper by programming an abstract). In: The Digital Review. Issue:00 Digital Essaysm. DOI: 10.7273/3vnt-my71

What happens if we use combinatorics (programmability) and randomness (indeterminacy) to write an essay that is never the same, but one that is variable instead? More: what if we compose a generative and aleatory abstract pointing to papers that were never published or even imagined? What we propose here is an experimental "short-form essay" that takes the shape of an outline of possible papers that were never written. Composed of a title, an abstract (with purpose, problem, methods, results, and conclusions), and a set of keywords, it will use a lexicon of e-lit theory and related concepts, suggesting digital essayism to be a performance of theory.

Why should e-literature seek to go mainstream, when the mainstream is, par excellance, the medium where the disruptive cosmology of Technic reproduces itself? Mainstream is the school that indoctrinates us, readers, writers and academics, into believing that there are no alternatives to infinite growth and cutthroat competition, even when such principles are hidden behind a mask of openness and inclusion.

Fear (Phobia), the voice (Phonia) and dialogue (Phagia) are essential conditions for survival in a time marked by doubt, but also by new agencies and resistance. In the Fobias section we ask: who is afraid of Iberian, Ibero-American/African and decolonized languages in the South? The Fonias section, in its turn, is related to the voice: action, operation, agency. We are a voice and we want to hear our voice: resistance. Finally, after the south and the sun, salt. Fagias as in anthropophagy (Oswald de Andrade), but also an invocation of autophagy, revisitation, transcoding.

Estela Rodrigues' book seems to fall within the scope of an expansive, or centrifugal, reading practice, that is, reading through writing. «Inflammatio», de António Barros TORRES, Rui (2018). «Inflammatio», de António Barros. In: Catalog of the exhibit Inflammatio, by António Barros Coimbra, Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra.

There is something about the absence of color in António Barros' work that is unsettling. A mourning and a death that soon transfigure into struggle and love. Black and white from which the light emanates: a work illuminated by the creative power of poetry, illuminating the perception of those who touch it with their gaze. A look immediately transfigured by catharsis, a liberation operated by fire: a purification through combustion, a penance.

OEI TORRES, Rui (2018). Dialogue and openness in Portuguese Experimental Poetry. In: OEI # 80–81 - The zero alternative: Ernesto de Sousa and some other aesthetic operators in Portuguese art and poetry from the 1960s onwards, ed. Jonas Magnusson & Cecilia Grönberg, Stockholm, Sweden. pp. 447-454. ISSN: 1404-5095; ISBN: 978-91-88829-01-6

The myriad of textual practices associated with Portuguese Experimental Poetry (concrete, visual, spatial, sound, and video forms of poetry, but also performances and happenings, as well as digital poetry) spotlights the difficult task of finding paths with cohesive aesthetic coordinates. Classifications and taxonomies are invariably incomplete and insufficient. These particular practices, or ‘operations’, as argued by Ernesto de Sousa concerning the work of Melo e Castro, place us before "a new dimension, resulting from a new analysis," articulated "in the absence of given labels."

Miguel Azguime invests his creative energy in multiple crafts: he is a performer/poet, researcher/promoter, composer/performer. The itinerary that I propose here, through the presence of sound in the absence of the author/actor, will be based on a reflection on his electroacoustic opera O Itinerário do Sal [The Salt Itinerary], where there is a convergence of hybrid writings that result from the crossing of the listed crafts.

The inherent complexity of multimodal databases constitutes a challenge in terms of structuring and interoperability. However, it also stimulates the translation of organized data into enhanced and adaptable interfaces. Using the Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature (www.po-ex.net) as a framework, I will describe possible strategies for curating digital archives, through appropriation and remixing of database assets, allowing artistic and creative re-interpretations of experimental and electronic literature.

Conversation with Pedro Barbosa: «Our free will is very restricted, very relative: if philosophy has never reached an agreement on this, it is because it uses a dichotomous logic, of yes and no between two absolutes. But today, more than ever, we need modal logics. However, to inhabit this world of material density, we need this “diving dress” that we call the physical body, and within it we are reduced to certain structures of logical thought, to notions of space and time, and above all to this modality that limits us, which is a vision of linear time, as past-present-future."

This generative and combinatory essay is an improvisation of electronic literature (e-lit) theory. More specifically, “e-Lit Jazz” is about re-situating e-lit in terms of jazz but also riffing on e-lit, approaching e-lit as jazz. This theory performance takes multiple forms, as is the case for an improvisation.

Experimentation with the creative process — understood as invention and provocation, but also as transgression and denunciation — focally affected the discursive enunciation of literary and artistic creations.

Portuguese literary experimentalism between the 1960s and 1980s (the period in which Salette Tavares was active in the movement) is specifically characterized by the concepts of information and structure. From the beginning, it was a form of poetry that revealed a semiotic understanding of both text and textuality.

"PO.EX: Essays from Portugal on Cyberliterature and Intermedia" is a radical and polemical work. It is polemical in displacing and re-situating accepted views and histories of electronic literature. It is radical in going to the roots of its topics, providing a systematic and persuasive account of cyberliterature and intermedia. For all this, it is a generous book.

Húmus by Herberto Helder (1967) is recognized for its direct quotation from Raul Brandão’s 1921 novel of the same name. However, Helder’s work is more than the simple intertextual suggestion of a text: it transforms it, putting into motion its latent power, reviving it. To creatively explore the plagiotropic relationships between Helder and Brandão’s work, we have engaged in our own plagiarian experiment in the creation of a third work. The text generator, also entitled Húmus, draws upon its predecessors as databases, allowing readers to re-read the tradition and conceptualize the links between its historical forbears.

Literary experimentalism presents itself cyclically throughout the history of literature, corresponding to a practice, rather than a specific literary period. In the second half of the 20th century, Portuguese poetic experimentalism, marked by the discovery of international visual and concrete poetry, led a group of poets to choose the name Experimental Poetry (PO.EX) to catalog their activities.

The political and ethical dimension of António Barros' ephemeral works makes it possible to achieve the poelitical status of a large part of literary experimentalism, but the common conceptualization of experimentalism is not enough to understand them: they require to poetics a certain number of silences, rather than teachings.

The analysis of some adverts evidences how intertextuality emerges as a privileged strategy that invites the reader to the advertising text, sending him to a universe of texts and references inscribed in his memory and in his culture, stimulating the imagination and the awakening of fantasy.

Poetica: An International Journal of Linguistic-Literary Studies, 74 TORRES, Rui (2010). Concrete Poetry in Portugal: Experimentalism and Intermediality. In: Poetica: An International Journal of Linguistic-Literary Studies, 74, Concrete Poetry: An International Debate, org. Tomoyuki Iino & Steve Clark, pp. 31-45. Tokyo, Japan: Yushudo Press. ISSN: 0287-1629. ISBN: 978-4-8419-0576-2

Concrete poetry does not constitute an organized movement in Portugal. Instead, one must consider a range of contemporary Portuguese poetic experimentations achieved by several poets which come close, at a given point in time, to the aesthetics of concretism. This distinctive feature of the Portuguese context is outlined in this article in a comparative perspective, situating the poetics and politics of experimentalism within the international context of concrete poetry, but stressing specific aspects of the critical, historical and political Portuguese context.

Utrecht, Igitur Publishing & Archiving, pp. 113-126. ISSN: 1874-9577

This article addresses the question of how aesthetic practices combined with ideological issues, and how the aestheticization of daily life is related to the political unrest of the 70s in Portugal, as its poets often challenged conventional critiques of the self-reflexive and self-representational stances of avant-garde poetries.

One of the trends in Portuguese experimental poetry is the questioning of literary tradition, thus invoking a discussion about what is meant by innovation. Retextualizations of works considered classic become renewal and translation strategies in this context, as was seen in the transformations carried out with the work of Luís Vaz de Camões.

This work results from a reflection on the possibility of literary criticism being inscribed, not in a practice of organization and classification, but rather in the discourse of its object, thus expanding the ambiguity of the text.
