Rui Torres

Rui Torres (Porto, 1973) is a poet and researcher whose work explores the intersection between literature and digital media. His creative practice focuses on the production of programmed poems that employ combinatory and generative techniques, developing forms of interactivity that invite readers to actively participate in the construction of the text within digital and multimodal environments. His work seeks to rethink the possibilities of poetry in the context of contemporary technologies, bringing together literary tradition, formal experimentation, and technological innovation.

He holds a degree in Communication Sciences, as well as a Master’s and PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures, and a postdoctoral degree in Semiotics and Communication. In both his research and teaching, Rui Torres articulates these fields with the transformations introduced by digital media. He is Full Professor of Communication Sciences at Universidade Fernando Pessoa, where he develops research and creative work in the areas of electronic literature, experimental poetry, and digital media. Throughout his career, he has also been a visiting professor at several universities in Portugal and abroad, and is currently a visiting professor in the Master’s program in Literary and Theatre Studies at the University of Granada, Spain.

He is a research member of the Culture, Mediation and Arts group at ICNOVA – NOVA Institute of Communication, and collaborates with the Centre for Portuguese Literature of the University of Coimbra. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) and co-editor of the Electronic Literature Series at Bloomsbury Publishing. He also coordinates the Cibertextualidades collection (Fundação Fernando Pessoa), dedicated to the study and practice of digital literature. Among his initiatives is the creation and coordination of the Digital Archive of Portuguese Experimental Literature, a project dedicated to the preservation, study, and dissemination of the legacy of experimental poetry in Portugal. In parallel, he develops electronic literature projects that reinterpret and remediate the Portuguese poetic tradition through digital media, many of which can be explored on this website.
